Infographic (Inuktitut to come)
The time lapse assembled by Aaron Sneep starts on November 1978 and goes to December 2018. There are two months with missing data (Dec 1987 and Jan 1988). The data are from the Sea Ice Index created by the National Snow Ice and Data Center (NSIDC). The User guide for the Sea Ice Index provides this description for the monthly sea ice extent data: “The monthly sea ice extent images show the expanse covered by ice at greater than 15 percent monthly mean concentration.” With concentration being the percent of a 25km x 25km cell covered by ice.
